NOAA Maui Monk Seal Projects

Sign Up:

Volunteers may use the Sign Up website to schedule times that they are available to respond.   There are three response areas on the calendar: ANY (willing to go anywhere except Hana), North Shore, and West side and three time slots. Please choose an area and a time that works for you! Signing up for a time slot DOES NOT necessarily mean that you will be called on that day to respond, however, IF  a seal hauls out during your time slot, we know we can count on you to respond and will give you a call.

Observation Summaries:

A Google Form that collects your observation summary and sends it right to Eden at the NOAA office is found at:  https://goo.gl/forms/VfhhLqmGLE7VCkXT2

At the end of your observation, simply click on this link, fill in the form, and that's it!

Please continue sending photos taken of seals during your response shifts to Nicole Davis at nicole.davis@noaa.gov.

Hotline Dispatch

Hotline Dispatch volunteers are on-call to respond to sightings of Monk Seals who have hauled out on a shoreline.  Hotline Dispatch volunteers answer calls to the hotline; record sighting reports; and dispatch trained Monk Seal Response Team members to the site.

Hotline Dispatchers must undergo specific training and have approval to serve in this capacity.  Contact Nicole at:  nicole.davis@noaa.gov

Public Outreach

NOAA Monk Seal volunteers who are approved to conduct Public Outreach share information about Hawaiian Monk Seals with the greater Maui County community.  They may speak at civic clubs (Rotary, Kiwanis, etc.); provide information at local venues such as the Queen Ka`ahumanu Mall; or represent NOAA Monk Seal Volunteers at marine based venues such as the Maui Ocean Center or the Pacific Humpback Whale Sanctuary.

Public Outreach volunteers must undergo specific training and have approval to serve in this capacity.  If interested, contact Nicole at:  nicole.davis@noaa.gov

Educational Programs

NOAA Monk Seal volunteers provide educational programs in public and private schools, grades pre-K - 12.  Educational programs focus on the Hawaiian Monk Seal, native habitats of the monk seals, respectful viewing practices, and conservation efforts.

Education Program volunteers in this role must undergo specific training and have approval to serve in this capacity.  If interested, contact Nicole at:  nicole.davis@noaa.gov
